Research

My research field, English and Digital Linguistics, is at the interface of language and digital technology. I investigate language data with digital methods, and I develop freely available software others can use to learn and analyse language. I explore aspects like human-machine interaction, and develop potential practical applications in the field of digital humanities.

Research interests

My research interests are very wide, with a focus on corpus linguistics, applied linguistics, linguistic aspects of popular culture, situation-specific language use, software development and science communication.

Current projects

My current research projects center around topics such as

  • communication between humans and artificial intelligence
  • how to make the testimonies of Holocaust survivors accessible in an interactive way
  • the gamification of English Studies

For more details of some of my current projects, see the Projects page.

Previous research

My previous and ongoing research comprises theoretical as well as applied aspects in the following fields:

  • Corpus linguistics
  • Cognitive linguistics
  • Advanced language learning
  • Linguistics and popular culture
  • Language and/in film
  • Language and food
  • Punctuation and spelling
  • Register and genre
  • Naming
  • Hybridisation and copying in language
  • Morpho-semantic lexical relations
  • Pronunciation
  • Palimpsestual spaces and augmented reality

In my previous research, I have addressed questions such as:

  • What's the impact of Star Wars on the English language?
  • How can we translate the magic of fairy tales?
  • Is there a rule when to use hyphens and spaces in English compounds?
  • Is it really possible to use any English word to refer to drunkenness in English?
  • Can we predict what English will be like in the future?
  • Do comics and academic articles use punctuation in different ways?
  • Is it possible to create names for prehistoric skeletons based on their location that sound like real names?
  • Is it more motivating for players of educational games to save a treasure or a person?
