Media
I engage in the creation and development of different types of media, such as podcasts, films and video games. For more details about these, also see my LingComm and Software pages.
If you are journalist and would like to ask me questions about language, linguistics or my own research, feel free to get in touch.
Podcast
In the podcast Linguistics Behind the Scenes, my American co-host Dominic Piazza and I have light-hearted conversations about anything that has to do with language and linguistics – a truly mixed bag! Through a range of fun facts and personal stories, we explore everything from pop culture and history to chatbots and social conventions, with each episode usually centred around my research. There are complete transcripts for all episodes, and most of the research articles discussed in the podcast can be read for free online by following the links in the episode descriptions.
Films
My YouTube channel offers different videos on what I do in my research and teaching. For example:
- Find out about a simple strategy to spell English compounds in this three-minute video tutorial.
- Watch the trailer and gameplay for the VR quiz app Bridge of Knowledge.
- Check out my video tutorials to learn how you can interact with Holocaust survivor Abba Naor's interactive digital testimony or use the software WordValue to explore texts using colours.
My students and I dubbed the"Sendung mit der Maus" film Viererkniffel into English. Watch the film to find out what makes Zoe's dice so special, and take a look at this poster to learn more about the process of film dubbing in class.
- Sanchez-Stockhammer, Christina. 2019. From „Sendung mit der Maus” to „Mouse TV”: Experiences from a linguistic film dubbing project.
Educational video games
The goal of the mobile VR quiz adventure app Bridge of Knowledge VR is to reach the other side of a chasm by answering multiple-choice questions projected on the planks of a suspension bridge. Players need to select the only correct plank with their gaze. If they pick the wrong answer, they fall off the bridge – except in fear-of-heights mode, where the bridge spans a calmly flowing river. Teachers can easily create their own levels by using a template in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Download the game and find out more at www.bridgevr.de.
